Subjects

First year

1st semester | 6 CFU

The aim of the course is to develop in students the ability to understand and master the design driven innovation processes, to develop strategic thinking, to engage stakeholders in projects in a constructive and finalized way, to define partnerships and to understand the basic elements of competition.

1st semester | 12 CFU

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the complexity of a product-service system project, through the exploration and understanding of the process leading from the “concept” to the actual product. Innovation Studio guides students in the development of a project idea in the form of a pre-series of products, which involves consideration of the entire production chain, related services and digital technologies, communication and interaction aspects, sustainability issues, social and market factors.

1st semester | 3 CFU

The aim of the course, which is part of the internship activities, is the preparation for the work practice, in particular through the development of “soft skills”. Thought as an innovative teaching activity, Teambuilding works in a practical way with students to support them in developing teamwork, negotiation, conflict management and leadership skills.

1st semester | 6 CFU

The aim of the course is to provide students with design-specific methods and tools for research and project development, in order to develop the ability to conduct and manage the entire product-service system design process. In addition to more technical skills related to design culture, Design Methods also aims to convey and develop skills related to “knowing how to be”, in particular with regard to the soft skills needed to work in multicultural teams.

2nd semester | 6 CFU

The aim of the course is to convey the theoretical foundations of service design through theoretical lessons and case studies. Service Design and Innovation provides students with an in-depth knowledge of key concepts and theories related to service design and innovation, as well as their relationship with technological and social transformations.

2nd semester | 12 CFU

The aim of the course is to train students in the overall design of a product-service system, with a particular emphasis on sustainability and focussing on the design aspects of services and on their manifestation in physical and digital touchpoints. The Product Service-System Design Studio is divided into theoretical lessons and applied activities: it guides students in identifying and formulating a problem, in developing a “concept” and its technical feasibility, with activities carried out in teams. It focuses on current issues and it dialogues with actual organisations and actors, through structured forms of context analysis and the co-design of ideas. It integrates different disciplinary contributions and provides the opportunity to apply design methods and tools in practice.

The PSSD Design Seminars are one week intensive workshops with international teachers introducing novel perspectives and approaches to the class. The main focus of these workshops, part of the internship activities, is to deepen the implications of designing for environmental sustainability and of designing with and for new and often disruptive technologies.

2nd semester | 6 CFU

The aim of the course is to provide students with the tools to render and present a design project of a product-service system and the research behind it. Through the analysis of practices and the critical presentation of different research and design techniques, the course leads students to experiment with innovative tools for the representation, visualization and prototyping of projects, using different technologies, stylistic methods and narrative approaches.

Second year

1st semester | 18 CFU

The aim of the course is to train students in the advanced and executive design of a product-service system: from the identification of design opportunities to the generation of ideas, from development to prototyping in the field. The Final Synthesis Design Studio provides useful tools to interpret in a critical and personal manner the themes of the project in the wider context of the ongoing cultural, social and technological transformations. Students are asked to elaborate an original project working in teams, with particular attention to semantic, functional, typological and technical aspects, as well as to define the elements of economic feasibility.

The students attending the course System Design for Sustainability will be able to design Sustainable Product-Service System (S.PSS), with a focus on Distributed Economies (DE), i.e. win-win business/offer models where the economic interest of the provider/s continuously seeks environmentally and/or socioethically beneficial new solutions.

Thesis work is strictly individual. Coordinated theses with a common introductory part and separate theses can be considered.

The thesis may be written by a maximum of three authors, even if they are enrolled in different Master’s degree courses. The Committee must always be able to identify the contribution made by each applicant.  There is only one Supervisor and they must be a lecturer (Professor or Researcher), whether permanent or contracted at the University (in the current or previous academic year) and may be a member of the Degree Committee. He/she may be assisted by one or more co-supervisors (CU) or by experts in specific subjects, even if they are external to the School.

The Supervisor is usually included in the Graduation Committee that will judge the undergraduate student and make its proposal for a mark.

The student submits a thesis to the Degree Examination Board, which may consist of a theoretical, design, experimental or innovative research thesis (Research or Long Thesis) or a thesis to consolidate and refine knowledge already acquired (Consolidation or Short Thesis).

In the MA Program students carry out an internship at a company, professional studio, study centre, body, etc. with a partnership agreement with the Politecnico di Milano which fulfils the requirements of current legislation specifying that, on completion of the agreed internship period a certificate will be issued.

Such internships can be incorporated into students’ study plans in the 2nd year of study.

Internship is an educational experience which gives students real experience of the world of work. The host company must be aware of and agree to the legal regulations and the need for educational support and the student must accept and show an ability to respect the company’s rules and behaviours.
